Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) Final Girl

Texas Chainsaw Massacre was Directed by Tobe Hooper it was a low budget film most likely because it was independent film. They had a budget of $83,532 which means they had to work with what they got e.g in the dinner scene the fake blood wasn't working so the actress had to cut herself in order to get blood. In the open scene we get a documentary feeling when the over voice is narrating the story. This is making the audience believe the story and what it has to hold next. By saying "the most bizzare crime in the annals of american history" makes the audience believe the story is true, as this film came out in America, Americans believed this story was true making the audience more scared especially by stating a state. We get a black screen with diegetic noises in the back ground as well as a man making struggling noises we all hear the flash of the camera showing disturbing images through a flash. This make the audience feel disgusted by what they see, i believe it supports Linda Williams theory relation of pornography as the audience is meant to have a physical reaction to the images they are shown, also as a slasher film it is critical for the audience to feel disgusted as they are shown a lot of blood and disturbing scene such as the family dinner scene. In the opening scene you can also hear diegetic noise of bone being thrown or trees. In the opening scene we hear an over voice of a news reporter (again linking back to the documentary style) mentioning that bodies are going missing this links to Ed Gein who was an American body snatcher he would then make them into furniture by using the skin for an example. This convect was also used in psycho. Chainsaw massacre relates to Clover final girl theory, the final girl usually has a unsex name in this case the final girl is Sally which is a unisex name living up to the final girl stereo type. Her friends get killed one-by-one until she's left, she is the one to confront the killer or gets away to "tell the story". Clover believe this is when the character becomes more masculinized in the film as she fights back. In the final scene Sally manages to escape by running through the window perhaps indicating her only way to freedom. She is wearing white jeans to connote her innocence but it is covered in the blood showing that she has faded away from her innocents or that her innocents has been replaced by evil. She runs away from they psychotic family and finds a red truck which indicates danger straight away, she manages to escape buy the man in the van dies. she eventually climbs into a blue van that helps her escape leaving the killer unsuccessful. I don't particularly like this film as i find it very unrealistic and boring, I also find it very predicable. I do however like the mystery of Leather face and find his face white disturbing.
