Creating demon face (Practice)

I believe the make up was a success it was scary and it looked frightening. It is likely this is the make-up we will use in our final. I am the demon in our trailer as well as Nia. Sabrina done the make up. she had liquid latex, dark lipstick and fake blood. she placed the liquid latex on my face then put tissue on to build it up like paper mache and covered it with the latex again. once it was dry Sabrina was able to put into the hard tissue and open it like a cut. she then put the lipstick and fake blood on the latex as well as black eyeliner to make it look darker. this gave a great effect on the fake cuts and it got a lot of reaction when walking around the school.

Choice of production company name

When creating our production name we was thinking about what genre was was possibly thinking of. We though about horror as a whole and liked the idea of a physiological horror. We then thought our name has to suit the horror industry and using the mythical creature of a cyclops worked well as it kind of linked to Edward developed theory of 'the other'. As we are are doing a physiological we thought an eye would be good as eyes are referred to 'the wind to your soul' which i think works well with the horror genre we picked. We picked a directors chair as it works well with films to make our logo unique we made the chair look decade. The font we used for cyclops reminds me of something supernatural when something interferes with the TV, the white glow behind the eye adds to the supernatural look becuase it looks like the light from UFO's.

Planning our Narritive

we created a group chat where we discussed ideas that we had using voice notes, app we could possibly use. camera angles characters it was an easy way of communicating when we wasn't together and it meant out text messages were like a brain storm.

Contemporary Horror Advetising Campaign Analysis

Carrie (2013)

This was a public advertisement for the up and coming film Carrie (remake). Due to the new technology that social media, producers are able to become more creative in they way they advertise things. This is an example that i found on youtube which went virtual. over all it had a positive out come. Over 60 million people globally have seen this which already is creating a fan base.
As you can can see this got a lot of view that led it being shared to facebook which once again creates a bigger fan base and more people aware of the new (remake) film Carrie. Once again millions of people liked, comment and shared. this was just from one page i found there are many others which shows that social media has become a really strong aspect of advertising. They have their own facebook page were they posted promotions on there, about dates, DVD'S (now) as well as clips from the film to keep people interested still. Also it being free help producers save money. Also because of the high rating of these videos they make it onto the news online which is another good way to advertise their film.

Hash tagging #FLEXLIKECARRIE was clever as it meant people on Twitter can share the video and use the hash tag to make the video trend which means it the most popular thing on twitter. This is more of the modern way of advertising they have also used more tradition ways such as advertising on TV, in cinemas and posters.
(Here are 3 posters I found)
I feel like producers today take advantage of social media because it a cost effective and easier way of advertising things now and it works. Its a good way to get reactions from the audience directly and people can share this easily although the more tradition way of advertising is still effect, I just feel that the way where media is moving now is towards Social media as it is so effective.

Research Rationale

Research Rationale

my target audience is ages 15-19 as there are students in the lower school in this age range so it seems appropriate. I will use a camera to film a focus group as well as the Mac to use quick player to be able to film the screen, i will then get my focus group to watch 3 different trailers of 3 different sub-genres to see what work well right now. I will also be looking at the year of the trailer to see how they develop and how my focus group reacts to them. I will be asking my focus group appropriate question to discover what trailer they like the most and why. Also what they would rather see and how to possibly improve them, this why my target audience is telling me what they like and i take take out the things they don't like to make a successful trailer.

I can also find articles to do with horror films and how they are produced to day. What conventions have stayed and what has changed this way I can see the development of horror and why they change these things. And if people have adapted to the horror genre as theories now days show that people in 20th recent are seen to be more pron to things. Looking more into this could help to create a "scary" story line.

I will also conduct a survey to gather information to help my trailer have the correct concept I can then get a better understanding of what makes a successful horror clip. When researching this I hope to discover why they are scared of it and what would they expect from a horror. creating a survey is a quick and easy way to gather information which is why I think its a good way of getting information.

I was also thinking of making a video of people telling me their fears as this is what horror films play from. knowing what their fears are can play a huge part on story lines as it will play on their mind. This way I can create a trailer that has some of these elements and my audience would actually be scared.

Audience Research/ Convention Of Horror

Conventions of horror trailers

From watching the trailers I notice there is always a equilibrium that changes. The sound track usually starts off calm then a silent occurs and a jump scare usually breaks the silence. children are usually the victim. fast clips are always used there are rarely any long clips. Its usually dark or filmed at night, hand held cameras are used. sound effect is defiantly a convention that all the horror film follows. a form of supernatural it a convention I found when watching all three horrors. catchy title during the film or just after. When looking at horror film childish like song come up as well as children voices and laughs.

Homes are a big location convention in horror as its the place you're meant to feel most safe so horror films play on this to make the audience scared, the house is usually isolated in the field e.g. in Sinister 2 they were in a house surrounded by a field this is a convention that is usually in horror films as it means no one can help them they're alone. There is usually one member of the family that dies or gets possessed in the trailer which is what I noticed. The trailer shows exciting and eye catching scenes to attract the audience. There is usually a clear vision of good and bad linking this theory to Levis Binary opposition. I noticed the mes-en-scene is usually old looking clothes especially if its a supernatural genre. Items such as, dolls, old house, weapons and  religious items usually occurs in a horror trailer a well as religious music.

The reason why I asked people what their fear was to have a better understanding of how to scare my target audience. The age range I'm thinking of aiming of is 15-18 so by asking people in this age range will help me later on. From this information I understand that a lot of people may have fear from the unknown e.g. heights, drowning and being set on fire. Although none of these people have experienced this fear they still fear it, as well as letting their imagination fill in the gaps of what could happen if they were faced by their fears. I will take in all this fears into constructing a good trailer, as well as doing further research.

Survey;

I constructed a survey to see what my target audience kind of like in horrors. I only gave a choice of 3 because I think these are the kind of sub-genres that it practical to create with the equipment we have. When watching Texas chainsaw massacre they made it out to be a real story which I thought was really effected and i wanted to know if the age I'm aiming at also like that kind of style is so, why. My last question was to find out what location my audience likes this way I an create something that they would like to see to see.
